Roll Label FAQs
-
How do roll labels work?
Roll labels are pressure-sensitive adhesive labels that come wound on a roll, ready for fast application — either by hand or with a machine. Labels are printed on a continuous backing liner (usually paper or plastic) and wound onto a core (typically 1″–3″ in diameter, though larger cores are not at all uncommon). Each label is die-cut so it can be peeled off easily while the liner remains intact.

How do I know what type of roll labels I need?
Here are the initial questions we’ll ask you when scoping your next roll label project:
- What substrate will the label be adhered to?
- What environment will it be applied in?
- Will the label be machine or hand-applied?
- What rewind direction best fits your process?
- Will the labels be stored for a period of time before application?
- If so, for how long, and in what type of atmosphere?
- What is the desired “shelf life” for the labels after application?
-
What can I customize for roll labels?
- A variety of materials and adhesive combinations
- Permanent, removable, or specialty (e.g., freezer-safe, high-temp, tamper-evident)
- High resolution process and spot color
- A wide spectrum of UV inks
- Indoor or outdoor use
- Sequential barcoding
- Variable data
- Custom die-cutting
- Lamination
- Spot or flood varnishes
- Metallic inks

-
What types of directions/cuts/shapes can roll labels have?
Roll labels can be printed and wound in the direction that best suits your equipment or application method:
- Over with image facing up, down, right, or left.
- Under with image facing up, down, right, or left.
- Butt-cut labels
- Our most economical roll label available. With this type of label, the bottom of the previous label butts up against the top of the next label, with no space between the two labels. So many uses, so little cost!
- Butt-cut labels cannot bleed and are provided on an easy-peel backing material.
- Circular, oval, square & rectangular labels
- Flexo printed roll labels are the best choice for high-quality applications.
- Our circular, oval, square & rectangular labels are available in a wide variety of stock sizes, paper label stocks and ink colors for a custom look at an uncustomary price.
- Special shape labels
- Use one of our existing dies and save while getting the shape you need.
- Take advantage of our stock shapes to create your own custom roll label with no extra die charge. Available on white paper, paper foil, and fluorescent paper, we will print your simple artwork on our stock shape.
- Custom shape labels
- Die-cut labels are available in custom shapes, may have a bleed, and are provided on an easy-peel backing material with the waste removed for your convenience.
-
